October is outdoorfest
October is going to be a busy month. One of my favorite events that I like to report on is the Annual Bureau County Pheasants Forever Ringneck Hunt.
This is open to the ringnecks who belong to the local chapter of Pheasants Forever. All hunters are asked to register by Oct. 10. If the quota is not filled by then, the club will open it up to other ringnecks from other clubs and then locals who wish to be a ringneck. They must be 12- to 18-years old and have a hunters’ safety card.
This is an excellent opportunity for a youngster to hunt live birds over a good hunting dog handled by an experienced hunter. The hunt is again hosted by Hickory Grove Hunt Club, and hunters are asked to be there before 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 20 for instructions. When the hunt is over, the club will run them into Tilly’s for lunch.
To register for the hunt, you should call Steve Wright at 815-408-1276 or Eric Paull at 815-646-4844. They will be able to give you all the info you need.
October will also be the annual Duck’s Unlimited Banquet to be held at the Met starting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Now, this year is the 75th anniversary of D.U. and I expect things to be upgraded as far as the quality of the raffle items and auction items.
The gun of the year is an outstanding firearm. It is a Browning Maxus that has been elaborately etched and decorated to celebrate the 75th anniversary.
Another unique firearm will be the 45 cal/410. I don’t know if you call it a rifle or a shotgun, but it has been a popular item before. A Savage .17 cal rifle will also be part of the auction.
D.U. has always sponsored a great banquet so get you tickets early. Tickets and info can be obtained by calling Erik Ellberg 815-876-6659 or Brett Brown 815-303-0884.
Youth hunt for duck hunters will be Oct. 27, also. The hunt will be from 7 a.m. to noon at the Princeton Game and Fish Club.
The PHS Sportsman’s Club will participate in an archery shoot and a trap shoot within the next two weeks. They are looking forward to that
Deer archery opens up Oct. 1. Make sure you have your license and proper tags.
I have been notified that the upcoming Walmart fishing tournament has been cancelled.
