October is outdoorfest

October is going to be a busy month. One of my favorite events that I like to report on is the Annual Bureau County Pheasants Forever Ringneck Hunt.

This is open to the ringnecks who belong to the local chapter of Pheasants Forever. All hunters are asked to register by Oct. 10. If the quota is not filled by then, the club will open it up to other ringnecks from other clubs and then locals who wish to be a ringneck. They must be 12- to 18-years old and have a hunters’ safety card.

This is an excellent opportunity for a youngster to hunt live birds over a good hunting dog handled by an experienced hunter. The hunt is again hosted by Hickory Grove Hunt Club, and hunters are asked to be there before 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 20 for instructions. When the hunt is over, the club will run them into Tilly’s for lunch.
