Seven up for SBA Hall

PERU — Seven new members will be added to the St. Bede Hall of Fame during Saturday’s Homecoming festivities. They are:
Tom McGinnis: From playing varsity sports for eight seasons at the Academy, McGinnis has spent 18 seasons as the “Voice of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.” His wife, Robin, is a news reporter for CBS TV in Philadelphia. At St. Bede, the 1979 alumnus was a three-year starter in basketball, a Most Valuable Defensive back and played quarterback in football. He was also  a three-year varsity tennis player.
Audra (Bima) Smith: A member of the class of ‘86, the former Audra Bima came up in the fledgling Lady Bruins’ basketball program when it started under former coach Don Carlson, playing varsity ball for four years. She also played volleyball for four years. The mother of three is still a part of the St. Bede family with sons Damin (senior) and Keaton (sophomore) now in school. The Smiths live in Ladd.
Don Causa: The 1961 Academy product did it all for the Bruins, playing in football and basketball for four years and two each in baseball and track. He and his wife live in Mendota and have three children and seven grandchildren.
Ed Crowe: The 1952 SBA graduate was a starting guard and leading scorer in basketball (14.5 ppg), earning Honorable Mention All-State honors. He also was co-captain and starting catcher in baseball. He was a member of the St. Bede community and Academy teacher for 20 years, coaching freshman basketball and tennis. He plays golf once a week and follows area sports.
Jim Dietz: A second inductee from the Class of ‘61, one could say Jim Dietz played big for the Bruins, a 5-foot-11 center, who was the No. 1 rebounder on the team and was a standout in defense. In football, he led the Bruins his senior year with nine touchdowns and three extra points, named as WLPO’s Outstanding offensive and defensive backs. He represented the Academy in the IHSA state track finals and competed in the 100- and 440-yard dashes and jumps.
He owns a small real estate company and lives in Loveland, Colo. with his wife, Kathy. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Gary Gahan: A three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball, the 1975 Academy graduate was named as St. Bede’s co-athlete of the Year as a senior. He said he loved sports and enjoyed “my time playing for St. Bede.” He and his wife, Kathy, live in LaSalle and have two children and two grandchildren.
Bob Schultz: For 48 years, the 1960 SBA graduate has been a member of the chain gang along the Academy sidelines for Bruins football games. The 69-year-old grandfather of three retired from American Nickeloid in June 2011 after 44 years and lives in Peru with his wife, Carolyn.
