September Hogs and Pigs Report released

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Field Office of NASS has released the USDA’s Sept. 1 Hogs and Pigs Report.

Total inventory of all hogs and pigs on hand in Illinois Sept. 1 was 4.65 million head, down 1 percent from last year. Market hogs, at 4.16 million head, were also down 1 percent from a year ago, while breeding hogs were at 490 thousand head, even with last year.

The June - August pig crop of 2.53 million pigs was even with last year. There were 250 thousand sows that farrowed, down 2 percent from last year. The average number of pigs per litter was 10.10, up from 9.90 during the same period last year.
