Six advance from Class A regionals

Six area boys representing four schools qualified for sectionals in 1A from three different regional sites Tuesday.

At Seneca: Two Hall Red Devils and two St. Bede Bruins played their way out of the Seneca regional at Nettle Creek Golf Course Tuesday. The Bruins finished within just one stroke of qualifying as a team, finishing fourth place (364) behind Aurora Christian (363).

St. Bede’s Joey Dudek posted the fifth-best score of the day at 82, second-best among advancing individuals who were not members of advancing teams. Hall’s Pete Mautino was seventh overall at 85 to advance with teammate Nick Scheri (89) and Jaret Olson (92) to Monday’s sectional competition in Elgin at the Golf Club of Illinois.

“Joey shot real really, fifth overall. That was fantastic for him,” SBA coach Rich Cummings said. “Jared played real well on the front, had some struggles on the back and was able to hang on for that second to last spot.”

The Bruins, however, couldn’t quite pull out the team berth, ending the careers of seniors Grant Bosnich and Mike Zywica, who had been individual qualifiers a year ago.

“It was disappointing for them. They went last year and wanted to take the whole team,” Cummings said. “They were the leaders of the team. I know the other kids feel bad for them, but they feel just as bad for the team. That’s the way they were this year.”

Sophomore Michael Barber of regional champ Beecher was the meet medalist with a 3-over 74.

At Monmouth: Bureau Valley’s Ryan Young advanced to Monday’s 1A PORTA Sectional. the BVHS junior fired a 90, the fourth-best score among individuals not on advancing teams, to move on. BV coach Dan Gustafson said Young is capable of playing better.

“He has worked so hard on his game this year that he deserves this, and I am very proud of him,” Gustafson said. “We were in a very tough regional with a lot of very good teams and a really difficult golf course. I am looking forward to sectionals and hopefully his game keeps getting stronger a couple more times this year.”

BV placed 10th as a team with a 418. Rockridge won the team title with a 326, while Monmouth United (337) and Sherrard (351) also moved on as teams.

At Freeport: Amboy/LaMoille’s Griffin Kozeal (88) and Jake Lucas (92) were among the top 10 players from non-advancing teams in the Class 1A Aquin Regional on Tuesday at Park Hills West in Freeport. They move on to the Westminster Christian Sectional on Monday in Algonquin.

Byron (322), Aquin (325) and Dakota (359) advanced as teams. Amboy (391) was sixth, Newman (420) ninth and Polo (423) 10th among 11 teams.
