Complaint dismissed

IVCC cleared on federal complaint

OGLESBY — A complaint alleging gender discrimination and retaliation against Illinois Community College has been dismissed.

On Friday, IVCC announced it had received word on Thursday the federal complaint, filed by a former college employee, was dismissed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for lack of evidence.

The complaint was filed by Peru resident Crystal Loughran, a former security guard at IVCC.
 Loughran, six other part-time security officers, two full-time safety services officers and the part-time interim director of safety services were honorably discharged by the IVCC Board in July 2011. The discharges followed the approval by the board of a three-year contract with G4S Secure Solutions, Inc. to provide privatized campus security.

According to the minutes of the July 5, 2011, special meeting, IVCC Trustee Dennis Thompson said the purpose of outsourcing was to improve the service. Research conducted by the advisory committee brought this issue to light. At that time, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said he had met with the security staff to let them know what had been proposed, and that the individuals were “extremely professional and were team players.”

Loughran’s complaint had alleged high-ranking administrators refused a former security employee an opportunity for advancement on the basis of gender and as retaliation against previously-filed work grievances.
Thursday’s announcement by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity said there was not enough evidence the administration violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through creating an environment of retaliation, bullying, misconduct and favoritism within the security division of campus.

Corcoran was pleased with the announcement.

“From the very beginning of this investigation, we maintained the college did nothing wrong, and now our position has been vindicated,” he said.
