Rock Island Alleman A regional soccer

Published: Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 4:45 p.m. CDT

Where: Alleman’s soccer field off John Deere Road.

Favorite: Monmouth-Roseville (8-8-2). Watch out for: Princeton (14-8-1).

Pairings: Friday: (4) RI Alleman 7, (5) Riverdale 0. Wednesday: Match 2 - (1) Monmouth-Roseville. Alleman (8-11-2), 4:30 p.m. Match 3 - (2) Princeton vs. (3) DePue (8-7-1), 6:30 p.m. Saturday: Title - winners 2-3, noon.

BCR insider: Princeton beat every team they faced in the field, including Riverdale twice by a combined 16-0 margin (10-0, 6-0) and host Alleman twice (2-0, 5-1), but somehow were rewarded with a second seeded rather than No. 1. The Tigers also beat Monmouth-Roseville 3-1. The only team the Tigers haven’t played is DePue, whom they will in the semis, but they have two wins over teams that had beaten the Little Giants. The two Bureau County entries will square at 6:30 p.m. in a game that might match the two best times. Bird shakes off the seeding snub, because “when it comes to the state series time, it doesn’t matter where you are placed, if you want to advance you have to beat them all. Otherwise you pack the gear up and wait until next year.” DePue coach Tim Stevens would have given the nod to Princeton, but thinks everything worked out OK. “I think Princeton should have been a 1 and we probably should have been a 4, so I think they wind up getting the match up they wanted. But I truly believe you play games on the field, you don’t play them on paper.” ... The Little Giants just took Mon-Rose to task Saturday 6-0, powered by four goals by junior Carlos Acosta, who now has 29 goals this season and 81 for his career. “We have the best player in the area, hands down. That gives you a chance,” Stevens said. ... The Bureau County rivals last met in the postseason in 2009 when the Tigers won by a “golden goal” in sudden death.

BCR pick: Princeton over Rock Island Alleman.

Next: Regional winner goes to the Mendota Sectional to face the Aurora Regional winner at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Somomauk is the top seed at Aurora.
