Tigresses win first tournament

MENDOTA — The Princeton Tigress tennis team has won all their dual meets this season. Now they’ve won their first tournament.

The Tigresses captured the Mendota Invitational Saturday, topping Sterling Newman 30-24 for top honors. PHS claimed a first and a second in singles and swept both doubles divisions.

Makenzey Wlson won all three matches, defeating St. Bede’s Claudia Szezpaniak 6-3, 6-2 in the championship. She also defeated Coal City 6-3, 7-5 and Newman 6-0, 6-0 to improve her record to 21-3.

The PHS No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Blessman and Mckenzie Schafer defeated Rockford Luthe-ran 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 for first place. To get there, they defeated Newman 6-0, 6-1, and Coal City 7-5,6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, PHS’ Kate Morrow and Taylor Behrends bested Newman 6-3, 6-2 for the championship. They also defeated St. Bede 6-1, 6-1 and Coal City 6-3, 6-1.

Jen O’Neil placed third at No. 1 singles, defeating Mendota’s Michaela Delong 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a battle of top sectional seeds. O’Neil beat Coal City 6-2, 6-1, but lost to Newman’s Mary Alice Oswalt 6-4, 6-1.

St. Bede placed sixth (15) in the eight-team field.
