Olivet’s Holmes wins CCAC golf championship
Gwen Holmes is in the swing of things for the Olivet Nazarene University golf team.
The ONU senior from Princeton took medalist honors in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Confer-ence (CCAC) Invitational held at Juday Golf Course Oct. 1-2, leading the Tigers to the team title. Holmes shot rounds of 80 and 82 to finish at 162 to lead the field.
ONU and Holmes continued their links mastery at the University of St. Francis Invitational over the weekend at the Inwood Golf Course in Joliet. She finished strong with a second-round score of 80 to finish atop the leaderboard once again by one stroke.
As a team, Olivet finished the two-day event with a first-place team score of 668.
Volleyball
Individual honors also were bestowed upon some local volleyball athletes
Bowling Green State University’s Leah Shaw, a senior from Princeton, was named Defensive Player of the Week in the Mid-American Conference Sept. 24 for her play in leading the Falcons to straight set wins over Ohio and Kent State. She had a career-high seven blocks against Kent State and two blocks in the win over Ohio. She added 17 kills including a first set-clinching kill with the Falcons holding to a 24-23 lead.
Shaw leads the Falcons (10-7, 4-0) with 63 blocks (1.07 per set) and is ranked fourth with 106 kills (1.8).
At IVCC, former St. Bede Lady Bruins Hailee Brayton and Kayla MacDavitt and L-P product Crystalynn Washkowiak were all named to the all-tournament team at Kankakee, where the Lady Eagles finished first over the weekend.
Erin Polte, a senior setter from Spring Valley, had 12 assists for Graceland University in a 3-0 loss to Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa Friday. She is a close second in assists on the season with 571 in the Yellowjackets 6-2 lineup.
Jaqui Kane, a junior from Princeton, had six kills and two solo blocks for Eureka College in a 3-1 loss to Principia. She has played in 10 matches with 10 starts, ranked third in kills (1.8 kpg) for the Red Devils (3-11.)
At Kane’s former school, Lincoln College, freshman Taylor Hewitt (Bureau Valley) had 14 digs and 3 three points in the Lynx’s 3-0 win over Danville College.
Football
Junior quarterback Brik Wedekind (Princeton) gave Monmouth College an early second-quarter 7-0 lead with a 4-yard touchdown run at Grinnell (Iowa) College. That would be the Fighting Scots’ lone score of the day in a 21-7 loss. Wedekind (16-34) threw for 134 yards, three passes to Austin Peterson (Wyanet, Bureau Valley) for 37 yards.
Princeton’s Jacob Robison started at center for Rockford College in Saturday’s 31-7 loss to Lakeland.
