Princeton and St. Bede ventured to the Plano Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.
The Tigresses came in with a third-place finish with the Lady Bruins claiming eighth in the 16-team field. Princeton’s Katherine Pranka and St. Bede’s Morgan King were named to the All-Tournament team.
PHS swept pool play, defeating Hinckley-Big Rock 25-6, 25-7, Sandwich 25-15, 25-15 and Earlville/Leland 25-15, 25-18. After a 21-25, 25-15, 11-15 loss to Timothy Christian, the Tigresses reaped a 25-20, 25-16 win over Plano to capture the third-place prize.
Pranka led the Tigresses (23-10) with 34 points, 29 kills and 10 aces. Other top contributors were Becca Hult (26 kills, 3 blocks), Alicia Poss (26 kills, 10 blocks), Emmalee Sears (21 kills, 6 digs), Michelle Kelly (97 assists, 21 digs, 22 points), Mollie Bates (24 points, 20 digs), Heidi James (18 points, 11 points, 5 aces) and Rachel Frank (24 points).
St. Bede finished the day with two wins and three ties. The Lady Bruins defeated Genoa-Kingston 25-17, 25-15 and West Aurora 25-18, 25-8 and split with Peotone 17-25, 25-22, Paw Paw 24-25, 25-17 and Plano 25-18, 17-25.
SBA coach Dawn Williams said the Lady Bruins (10-17-3) played much stronger Saturday, getting a boost from the return of Katie Joerger from a six-week absence with mono.
King had 50 digs along with 24 points and six aces. Other leading contributors were Abbey Nowakowski (30 points, 26 assists, 6 aces), Lauren Urbanowski (30 points, 23 kills, 5 blocks, 7 aces), Joerger (21 points, 22 digs), Lydia Stariha (17 kills, 15 points, 13 digs) and Olivia Mueller (16 kills).
The Lady Bruins are hosting a Pack The Pantry Night for Tuesday’s match vs. Princeton, collecting food items for the Hall food pantry. SBA asks that all players, families and fans bring canned goods, cereal, peanut butter, etc. to the game.
TCC Tournament: Top-seeded Streator Woodland rode a roller-coaster ride to capture the 2012 Tri-County Conference Tournament championship Saturday at DePue.
Woodland squared off against No. 3 Ottawa Marquette, taking the first set 25-16 only to have the Lady Cru turn the tables for a 25-15 second set win. Woodland bounced back for a 25-13 third set decision to take the title.
No. 2 seed Midland settled for third-place, defeating No. 4 Putnam County 25-22, 25-23.
Roanoke-Benson topped Peoria Christian 25-17, 25-14 for the consolation title.
Putnam County’s Paige Griffith and Taylor Erjausek and Henry’s Erica Briner were among the all-tournament selections.
Mendota Rally Tournament: Orion defeated Lexington 30-28, 25-23 to win the Mendota tournament Saturday. The host Spikers defeated Ottawa 25-12, 25-18 to take fifth.
BV freshmen tournament: The Storm captured top honors in their tournament Saturday, defeating Hall 20-25, 25-16, 15-7 Kewanee 25-23, 18-25, 15-12 and Princeton 25-15, 17-25, 15-11, all in three sets.
The Tigresses claimed second by defensive points tie-breaker with Kewanee placing third and Hall fourth.
Sandwich sophomore tournament: Princeton placed sixth in Saturday’s sophomore play at Sandwich. The Tigresses beat Plano 25-23, 25-19 and Paw Paw 25-6, 25-12 and lost to Seneca 25-23, 25-19 in pool play. They finished with a 24-25, 25-18, 15-14 win over Fenton and a 2-1 loss to Peotone to place sixth.
