One in five households in the United States has experienced food instability. Food instability can mean that families do not have enough food or that they have gone without food.

The Bureau County Food Pantry exists to help meet those food instability needs. It serve 10 communities within Bureau County — Dover, Kasbeer, Malden, Manlius, New Bedford, Ohio, Princeton, Tampico, Tiskilwa and Van Orin.

During this year, the food pantry has provided food for 1,035 households (or 2,709 Individuals). Food provided is enough for families for three days. The food pantry also provides holiday food baskets for Thanksgiving and Easter.

The food pantry provides other services to families in need. On an annual basis, and with a grant from the Bureau County United Way, the food pantry is able to provide school supplies to children from kindergarten to eighth grade in the 10 communities served. This year, 54 bags of school supplies were distributed to 32 families. An annual coat drive and distribution are held each fall. This year’s coat drive is taking place now through Nov. 8 with a “Stuff The Store Front” collection at Kramer’s Kitchen in Princeton. New or gently-used coats, mittens, hats and gloves are needed for school-age children.

The Bureau County Food Pantry is able to continue its work as a result of food and financial donations from churches, community groups, schools, local businesses and individuals throughout the communities as well as the Bureau County United Way.
