SVCC presents Pulitzer prize-winning drama, ‘Proof’

DIXON — Sauk Valley Community College’s Theatre Department invites the public to a night of drama with the production of “Proof,” winner of the 2001 Pulitzer prize and Tony Award for best play. Show times are 7 p.m. Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17. There will also be two matinees at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 and 18. All the performances will take place at SVCC’s Mathis Theatre.

On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness — or genius — did she inherit?

Director Anna K. Kurtz says that “Proof” has been one of her favorite plays for many years. “Audiences will instantly be drawn into the drama surrounding these characters. Life is complex, human beings are complex, and relationships are complex. This play reflects that complexity. Just like life, the characters of Proof experience joy and experience sorrow; they have moments of pain and moments of hope. Along with all of these emotions there is also humor.” Kurtz encourages audiences to attend this play, promising a rewarding experience. “Come experience this play with us. Escape the trials and tribulations of your life and become immersed in those of the characters in Proof.”
