October has been designated as Respect Life Month by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is a time when we draw attention to the gift of life and our calling to protect all life, especially the elderly and the unborn. Another national campaign, 40 Days for Life, also falls in October. It calls for prayer, especially outside of abortion clinics, and fasting to end abortion. It’s efforts have been fruitful, over 6,000 documented lives have been saved and at least 69 abortion workers have resigned from their jobs.

Unfortunately, not everyone shares our passion for protecting the gift of life. Sadly, our president has not yet come to understand the dignity and uniqueness of new life. He must not realize that at conception the new human being has it’s own unique, never to be repeated DNA. At conception the baby’s sex, eye and hair color and even its tendency to be right or left handed is established. We all started that same unique way. But while our president was an Illinois senator, he voted four times to deny health care to late-term babies who miraculously survive their abortions. He voted to withhold all medical assistance including a warm blanket, oxygen or simple hydration to keep them alive. He stated that the wishes of the mother, death to the child, must be granted instead of the needs of the child. Healthcare for all must not discriminate against the unborn and newly born.

Our president is a stanch supporter of Planned Parenthood, our nation’s largest abortion provider. This million dollar industry receives nearly $1 million a day or $360,000,000 a year from the federal government. Our president recently said they are an important provider of women’s breast cancer screenings. Yet in reality, they only hand out vouchers. They do not do mammograms or own any machines to do them. The vouchers could go directly to the mammogram providers. No wonder they have donated millions of dollars to run re-election ads. The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute published a survey from women who obtained abortions; 53.6 percent reported they were using contraception when they conceived. Our nation’s problem is not the lack of birth control; it’s unfortunately the lack of self control, dignity and respect.

Please pray for our president, our nation and all leaders that we may all gain the wisdom and truth to appreciate and respect every gift of life.
