STREATOR — Community Players of Streator’s 56th season will begin with a celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there in “Church Basement Ladies.”
Directed by Greg Tullis of Streator, the musical comedy features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965. They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young and keep the pastor on course. Audiences will recognize these ladies as they witness the church year unfold from below the house of God. “Church Basement Ladies” will open May 19 and run through May 25, 2013.
In June, Brian Steep of Ottawa will direct “Leading Ladies” by Ken Ludwig, author of “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo,” both previously presented at Engle Lane. In this hilarious comedy, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves down on their luck. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pa., is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long-lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. When they get to York, however, they find out that the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces, and hilarity unfolds. “Leading Ladies” will run June 16-22, 2013.
Another blockbuster summer musical is in store with “Legally Blonde: The Musical” in July. Based on the movie, this romantic comedy is about knowing who you are and showing what you’ve got. When Elle Woods get dumped by her boyfriend, she decides to follow him to Harvard Law School and win him back. With some help from her new-found friends Paulette, Emmett and her chihuahua Bruiser, she learns that it’s so much better to be smart. Directed by Joey Beavers of Peru, “Legally Blonde” will be presented July 14-20, 2013.
Engle Lane’s annual youth production, a long-standing theatre tradition, is slated for August. Directed by Rhonda Sunken of Toluca, Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” is a stage adaptation of the Disney hit film for young performers. All your favorite characters are here in a delightful musical full of magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides. See the stars of tomorrow and let your spirits soar with excitement during the run of “Aladdin Jr.” Aug. 11-17, 2013.
First produced at Engle Lane in 1993, “Boeing Boeing” was also recently revived on Broadway where it won a Tony award for Best Revival of a Play. This comedic farce tells the tale of American playboy Bernard, a successful architect living in Paris, who juggles three fiancées, all of them flight attendants. He tracks their airlines’ timetables, while his long-suffering housekeeper, Bertha, reluctantly resets the menus and the bedroom décor, depending on the arrivals and departures of each woman. Chaos ensues when all three end up in the apartment at the same time. “Boeing Boeing” will be directed by Bill Jankowski of Ottawa and runs Sept. 8-14.
The 56th season will conclude with the musical “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” Oct. 6-12. Directed by Tyler Reviglio of Peru, this award-winning musical features memorable songs such as “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “My Blanket and Me” and “The Doctor Is In.” Spend an evening with some of your unforgettable childhood friends in this rousing tribute to Charlie Brown based on the comic strips “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz.
All Engle Lane shows start at 2 p.m. Sundays and 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at the William C. Schiffbauer Center for the Performing Arts at Engle Lane Theatre, 1012 Columbus Road in Streator.
“We are pleased to have such a diverse and quality lineup of shows for our 56th season,” said Deana Brown, Community Players production chairwoman. “From new shows to old favorites, this season offers something for everyone.”
Season tickets for 2013 are currently on sale and can be purchased by contacting the box office manager at 815-672-4066. Prices start at just $60 for all six shows, or just $10 per show, a savings of about 45 percent off of individual show tickets. The Super Saver plan provides a seat to all six shows for $60, and ticket holders must call the box office to reserve a seat for each production, prior to tickets going on sale to the general public. Reserved ticket plans are available for one, two, three or four or more individuals purchasing tickets together for the same night for all six productions. These plans provide you with the same seat for all productions and do not require calling the box office for reservations each time. Prices range from $60 to $70 per season ticket, depending on the number purchased together. Individual show tickets are $20 for musicals, $15 for plays and $10 for children 12 and under for all productions.
