A/W rolls in playoff opener

Annawan/Wethersfield rolled to a 28-14 win over Watseka in Saturday’s 2A playoff opener at Kewanee.

Micum Smith rushed for 126 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Titans (9-1).

No. 3 A/W will travel to No. 2 seed Downs Tri-Valley (9-1), a 42-7 winner over Havana, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Morrison, the defending 2A state champion, fell to the Lincoln Trail’s Aledo Mercer County 25-14.

Class 1A: Ottawa Marquette drilled Northeastern Athletic Conference rival Chicago Luther North 44-8 on Friday to remain undefeated. The Crusaders will host Forreston (8-2) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Class 3A: A clash of Big Rivers Conference rivals saw Sterling Newman beat Erie/Prophetstown 21-6. The Comets took a 14-0 halftime lead on a pair of one-yard touchdown runs by Nick Rude. The Panthers struck for a late third-quarter score on a 40-yard run by Zach Inskeep, but the Comets answered with a fourth-quarter TD to put the game away.

Newman (10-0) will stay at home, squaring off at 2 p.m. Saturday against Monmouth-Roseville, which beat the Big Rivers’ St. Bede Bruins 40-27.

Class 4A: Geneseo ate up Sandwich 17-0 Saturday, sending the Maple Leafs into the second round back home against Coal City. The Maple Leafs posted their 50th consecutive winning season with a 5-4 finish to the regular season.

Class 5A: Sterling was no match for Woodstock North, who rolled to a 68-27 win over the Golden Warriors Saturday.

Class 6A: The undefeated Ottawa Pirates marched on by defeating Normal 38-17. The Pirates (10-0) will host Rock Island (8-2), a 47-10 winner over Normal West, at 2 p.m. Saturday.
