Rockets clear sectional hurdle

Rock Falls cleared a hurdle Tuesday, defeating LaSalle-Peru 25-20, 25-16 in Tuesday’s Class 3A Sectional semifinals at Mendota. It was the Rockets’ first sectional win after two tries.

“We played awesome. Everyone was so cohesive,” said Rock Falls senior Jordan Giddings, who had nine kills. “It felt great to overcome something that we haven’t been able to do these past 3 years.”

The Rockets (28-10) will face Dunlap, a 25-21, 25-18 winner over Freeport in Thursday’s title match at 7 p.m. The Rockets thumped Dunlap 20-7, 20-12 in pool play Oct. 6 at the Dixon Invitational.

Rock Falls eliminated Princeton at regional last week.

Class 2A: St. Bede Regional champ El Paso-Gridley fell to Watseka in a marathon match at Seneca. Watseka won the first set 25-19, EPG took the second 31-29 and Watseka came back to score a 28-26 win in the third set. Thursday’s final will pit Watseka vs. the host Irish, who were a 25-22, 25-23 winner over Kankakee McNamara.

At Sherrard, the Three Rivers champion Riverdale defeated Monmouth United 25-15, 25-15. They will face future Three Rivers rival Orion, a 25-12, 25-18 winner per Peoria Christian in Thursday’s finals.

Class 1A: Earlville Regional champ Newark fell to Keith Country Day School 25-14, 25-17 at the Polo Sectional and Stockton defeated Erie 26-24, 25-17.
