Saturday Sports Update

Bureau Valley's Regan Weidner used a strong kick to place second in the IHSA Class 1A State Cross Country Meet in Peoria.

The Storm sophomore ran a time of 17 minutes, 45 seconds, edging Decatur St. Teresa's Rachel Devereux by a second. Ivy Handley, a senior from St. Teresa was first in 17:24.

Weidner is the second state runner-up in school history, with future U of I runner Jason Bill taking second in 2001.

BVHS junior Ryan Taylor placed 49th in the 1A boys race with a time of 15:52.

IHSA Football Playoffs

Class 2A: Amboy/LaMoille rolled to a 43-18 win over Orion in a Class 3A second-round contest Saturday night at Orion. The Clippers outscored the West Central Conference's Chargers 31-15 in the second half.

A/L will meet Lincoln Trail Conference champ Aledo Mercer County, a 42-14 winner over Rockford Lutheran, in next week's 2A quarterfinals.

In other 2A action, Annawan/Wethersfield edged Downs Tri-Valley 16-12. The Titans (10-1) will travel to Clifton Central (10-1), which was a 28-0 winner over Carthage Illini West of the West Central Conference, in quarterfinal round play next week.

Class 1A: Stark County blasted Mooseheart 52-14 while Ottawa Marquette fell to Forreston 35-34 in overtime Saturday. The Rebels and Cardinals will meet for 1A quarterfinal action in Toulon.

Class 3A: Big Rivers Conference champ Sterling Newman downed the West Central's Monmouth-Roseville Titans 26-14. The Comets (11-0) will travel to Wilmington (9-2), which was a 48-8 winner at home over St. Joseph-Ogden in next week's quarterfinals.

Class 4A: Coal City stopped host Geneseo 12-10 while West Central champ Macomb fell to Peoria Notre Dame 41-21 at Peoria Stadium.

Class 6A: Ottawa rallied from a 20-7 fourth-quarter deficit to stun Rock Island 21-20 at Ottawa Saturday. The Pirates (11-0) will travel to Crete Mone (11-0) in a battle of unbeates in the 6A quarterfinals.
