From the editor’s desk
Today, Tuesday, is Election Day. I hope everyone will be heading to the polls to cast their votes for the candidates they believe will do the best job. Republican or Democrat ... it’s important to make your voice heard. I don’t know about you, but when I leave the voting booth, I always feel proud to be an American. I hope you’ll vote carefully today. Our future is in our own hands.
What’s the BigDeal? Every week, the Bureau County Republican offers its readers an opportunity to save some cash with our BigDeals! promotion. You can find our BigDeals! on our website at www.bcrnews.com. Following it the BigDeal! for this week:
• Just in time for the holidays to get your floors all spiffed up ... Get a three-day rental of the HOST® Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaning System for only $11.25. That’s a great savings from the regular price of $22.50. Note: This deal does not include the purchase of the cleaner.
And the winners are: The winners of our Halloween contest are “Corvyan Michael Clift” submitted by Debbie Kirk, first place; “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” submitted by Trisha Hamrick, second place; and “Cadience Bickett” submitted by Jessica Donna-Bickett, third place. The first-place prize is a pizza party at Princeton Pizza Hut; second-place prize is a gift certificate to iFocus2 Studios (April Casey Photography); and third-place prize is a pottery class for four at Annie’s Little Pots. Thanks to all who participated in this fun-filled contest, and congratulations to our winners!
I need your help. The BCR is publishing its annual “A Homemade Holiday” recipe section on Dec. 8. Like last year, we are asking you to submit your favorite holiday recipe for inclusion in this section, which will, no doubt, be kept for years to come. If you submit your recipe by this Friday, Nov. 9, we’ll even enter your name in a drawing to win a $100 very cool baking basket. The last day to submit a recipe is 5 p.m. Nov. 16.
It’s really easy to participate. Without using any abbreviations (spell out all words like tablespoon, ounces, etc.), type or write out your favorite holiday recipe. Make sure the directions to the recipe are complete and easy to understand. Include your first and last name, your hometown, your email and telephone number. (Your telephone number and email will not be published.)
You can submit your recipe via a variety of venues, including by email at email@example.com. You can also use our online form at www.bcrnews.com/forms/recipe. You’re also welcome to mail your recipe to the BCR at P.O. Box 340, Princeton, IL 61356, or you can drop it off at our office at 800 Ace Road, Princeton. Keep in mind the BCR has an after-hours drop box at the rear of our building, where you can also deposit your recipe if our office is not open.
Help me out on this one, friends. I can’t wait to see (and try) your recipes. By the way, feel free to submit as many recipes as you like.
Pet Photo Contest: Don’t forget to enter your pet in our pet photo contest. Log on to www.bcrnews.com and enter your favorite photo of your pet. Grand prize is a $100 gift basket for your pet and his/her photo on the cover of our 2013 Pet Calendar. Second through 12th place finishers get their pets’ photos in the calendar.
Just for fun: The voter says, “I wouldn’t vote for you, if you were St. Peter himself!” And the candidate says, “If I were St. Peter, you wouldn’t be in my district.”
Raking, raking, raking ... Are you raking or hoping the wind will cause your neighbors to rake? It’s difficult to believe Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. Schedule some time for yourself. Relax. Breathe. Exhale. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
