SVCC and Historic Dixon Theatre form partnership for this year’s band performances

DIXON — Audiences for the Sauk Valley Community College’s annual fall band concert will watch the performance in a new venue at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 as the band will showcase its talents in the Historic Dixon Theatre.

This fall the Sauk Valley Community College Concert Band faced an interesting dilemma. The group, under the direction of adjunct faculty member Mark Bressler, had outgrown the facility that it called home for many years. Enrollment for the group has hovered between 25 and 30 community members, college students and high school students since Bressler started directing the band three and a half years ago. This year the band hit an enrollment of 45. Many of the new college participants are high school students and community members looking for advancing opportunities to continue to practice and hone their musical performance skills.

Since the band rehearsal facility was now too small to accommodate the expanded enrollment, SVCC President George Mihel, Vice President Alan Pfeifer and Bressler began an earnest search for a temporary venue that could house the band and all of the equipment. After a one-month search, the Historic Dixon Theatre and the College entered into a lease agreement. The band will rehearse and perform at the theatre until a long term solution can be devised. The Historic Dixon Theatre has hosted many events over the years but it has never had a musical organization as a tenant. This is truly an exciting partnership of the arts for both SVCC and the Theatre.
