SV sets hearing for area business

SPRING VALLEY — The city is working with the owners of The Little Pinto Bean to have the roof fixed before it collapses and water damage impacts neighboring businesses.

City attorney Tom Tonozzi told the council at Monday's meeting a hearing is set for Nov. 16, but if the owners can secure a contract with a roofer, the city would be willing to continue the case into December.

“Time will tell,” Tonozzi said.

Mayor Cliff Banks said the roof of the building in the 200 block of St. Paul Street is in bad shape with mold and other issues, and he asked Mickey Venegas,  the son of the owner, if they would allow a structural engineer to inspect the building. He agreed but reiterated to the council that he and his family have been working to improve the property.

“We are trying to get the thing fixed,” Venegas said.

The family bid out the roof project, but the bid was “too pricey,” so they plan to take the roof off themselves over the Thanksgiving weekend to save money. They will then have a professional roofer come in and put on a new roof.

Venegas said he hoped to have a new bid and a contract with a roofer soon, and that they would contact the city as soon as that happens.

There is a lot of metal in the building that Venegas hopes to sell to pay for at least a portion of the roofing job. Banks said the metal can stay in the building and does not need be removed.

Spring Valley Police Chief Kevin Sangston said he would allow a dumpster to be placed on the street when they take off the roof.

Alderman Jim Taliano set a public health and safety meeting for Nov. 14 to discuss the Venegas situation and make a decision whether to continue the hearing into December.

In other business:

• The city referred an ordinance amending the land development code to allow for a proposed shooting rage to the planning commission. No date has been set. Alderman Dan McFadden set a legislative committee meeting to follow the public health and safety meeting to discuss the proposed range. As with all public meetings, residents can attend.

• A finance committee meeting was set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 for a developer presentation.

• Dan and Annette Richardson were granted a special use permit to operate a church at 121 E. St. Paul St. as long as certain conditions are met including receiving tax exempt status. The group was given a year from Jan. 1, 2013, to have the conditions met.
