Ring in the holiday season with Celebrate Sheffield on Saturday
SHEFFIELD — Holiday shopping and small town hospitality will be the theme of the day for Saturday’s second annual Celebrate Sheffield event with holiday giveaways, promotions and treats.
On Monday, spokesperson Mary Ann Cernovich said 20 village businesses and organizations are hosting open houses from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for not just Sheffield residents but for the entire area — for anyone who wants to get a headstart on their holiday shopping and celebration.
As a special feature, people can register at participating businesses and organizations to be entered in a $500 Sheffield Bucks drawing, Cernovich said. There will be several $10 and $50 winners, with two $100 winners. The names of winners will be drawn at 3 p.m. Saturday, but the winners do not need to be present to win.
Like last year, Celebrate Sheffield will also include free horse-drawn wagon rides around the community. The pick-up/drop-off sites will be the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church parking lot, Main Street, the historic Danish Church/Museum and the United Church of Christ (UCC), with the UCC stops at 10:30 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
Celebrate Sheffield will also include a “Gift Basket Walk” in which local businesses and organizations are providing themed gift baskets, Cernovich said. The baskets can be viewed at the Sheffield Pride Arts Center. Shoppers can bid on the gift baskets by silent auction with the bidding to end at 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Again, persons do not have to be present to win, Cernovich said.
Money raised through the Gift Basket Walk will go toward the “For the Kids” playground fundraiser, which was started about four months ago by area parents and grandparents to raise money for new playground equipment at Veterans Park. A total of about $50,000 is needed for the new equipment with about $20,000 raised to date, she said.
Celebrate Sheffield will also include free matinees of children’s holiday movies and free popcorn at the Pride Arts Center, at 10 a.m., noon and at 2 p.m.
A soup and sandwich luncheon will be held at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. As part of the luncheon event, people can also participate in a 50/50 raffle, bake sale and silent auction of decorated trees donated by Flowers by Julia, Emma’s Bloomers and Lake Street Florist.
Participating businesses and organizations will also provide free refreshments at their locations as shoppers browse through the town. Sheffield restaurants will also provide lunch and afternoon specials. The Sheffield Family Medical Center will provide free blood pressure and blood sugar checks from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Historic Danish Church and Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for touring.
Following the Celebrate Sheffield open houses, the United Methodist Church will have a ham and turkey supper starting at 5 p.m.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s event, Cernovich said there will be something for everyone when they come to Sheffield. The gift baskets will be varied; the food options and refreshments will be plentiful; and the shopping will be the perfect start for everyone’s holiday season.
