Lady Geese tip Lady Bruins

PERU — The 2012-13 basketball season began with a barn-burner at the Academy Tuesday where the visiting Wethersfield Lady Geese tripped the St. Bede Lady Bruins 59-58.

Wethersfield went up 29-19 at halftime and led 46-35 after three quarters before the Lady Bruins roared back. St. Bede outscored their guests 23-13 in the fourth quarter, and took a short-lived lead only to fall one point short.

“It was the first game for a lot of girls who had played minutes, and I think nerves of the first game and their aggressive defense came together and got us rattled,” SBA coach Tom McGunnigal said. “We made plays that I know we can eliminate over time because it is not typical for what I think this group will be able to handle.”
