Lady Geese tip Lady Bruins
PERU — The 2012-13 basketball season began with a barn-burner at the Academy Tuesday where the visiting Wethersfield Lady Geese tripped the St. Bede Lady Bruins 59-58.
Wethersfield went up 29-19 at halftime and led 46-35 after three quarters before the Lady Bruins roared back. St. Bede outscored their guests 23-13 in the fourth quarter, and took a short-lived lead only to fall one point short.
“It was the first game for a lot of girls who had played minutes, and I think nerves of the first game and their aggressive defense came together and got us rattled,” SBA coach Tom McGunnigal said. “We made plays that I know we can eliminate over time because it is not typical for what I think this group will be able to handle.”
Lydia Stariha hit a three-pointer with 4.2 left and McGunnigal took a quick timeout. The Lady Bruins forced a turnover and Laura Sickley hit a three at the buzzer, McGunnigal, noting, “we needed a four.”
Senior center Moe Dean led the Lady Bruins with 20 points, eight in the fourth quarter. Whitley Funfsinn added 11 points and Lydia Stariha chipped in nine and Laura Sickley had seven.
The Lady Bruins will return to action at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brimfield Tournament against Elmwood. They will also face Brimfield at 3 p.m. Saturday, Kewanee at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Wethersfield at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 23 and Princeville at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 24.
At Oregon: The Hall Lady Devils make their season debut at the Oregon Tip-Off Tournament Thursday against Fulton. They will come back the next night at the same time against Mendota. The Hall sophs face the same opponents with 7:15 p.m. tips.
