PRINCETON — A special youth program for 5- to 7-year-olds is available through the University of Illinois Extension - Bureau County office. The 4-H Cloverbud program is specifically designed to meet the educational needs and interests of this younger age group.

A countywide Cloverbud group exists for youth throughout the county; some 4-H Community Clubs also accept Cloverbud members. Interested individuals and communities may inquire to start their own Cloverbud group.

The Bureau County Cloverbuds group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bureau Extension office, 850 Thompson St. in Princeton. The theme for the meeting is “Science Fun: Sinking and Floating.” Participants will do experiments to learn about density and buoyancy. Please note a parent/guardian or older friend (ages 16+) is required to attend the meeting with the child. Families and siblings are welcome.

The group will also meet on Dec. 11 at the extension office. The theme for that meeting will be “Holiday Gifts for Family and Friends.” First-time Cloverbud participants are asked to R.S.V.P. in advance by calling the extension office at 815-875-2878.

The Bureau County Cloverbuds group is open to all youth ages 5 to 7 and not yet in third grade as of Sept. 1, 2012. The group will meet monthly from October through April; new members are welcome at any time during the year. There is a fee to participate in the Cloverbud program; however, no youth will be turned away due to an inability to pay.

The 4-H Cloverbud Program is activity-based and involves participation in cooperative, non-competitive, hands-on activities. Youth gain immediate results and positive feedback while having fun. This unique program has many benefits:

• Helps children begin to develop life skills in early elementary years.

• Offers the structured opportunities that some parents are seeking for their children.

• Provides age appropriate materials for groups such as home-schooled youth, day care facilities, school-aged childcare programs, and K-2 classrooms.

• Helps children develop positive attitudes about learning.

• Helps children gain knowledge in science, literature and art.
