Prophets trip Storm in OT
The opening night of the Three Rivers Conference boys basketball season proved to be a thriller at Prophetstown Tuesday where the host Prophets outlasted Bureau Valley 58-55 in overtime.
The Prophets made good on all six free throw attempts and made off with the three-point victory.
“In the end, our poor play to start the game, start the half, and start the OT session sank us,” BV coach Jason Marquis said. “We’ve got to get better about playing every minute of the game with the highest level of intensity we have, instead of having 20 or 25 minutes of good execution scattered throughout a 32-minute game.”
Brian Lange led the Storm with 14 points and Parker Neuhalfen added 13.
High school girls
St. Bede 53, Newman 37: The St. Bede Lady Bruins opened up a 27-19 halftime lead on the strength of a 10-4 second quarter and never looked back on the way to a 53-37 win over Sterling Newman at the Academy Monday.
Marisa Hermosillo had 14 points and Lydia Stariha 13 for the Lady Bruins. Raley Mauck helped seal the deal with all eight of her points coming in the fourth quarter, including 4 of 4 shooting from the free-throw line.
Amboy 55, LaMoille/Ohio 31: Katelyn Liebing scored 22 points and Autumn Smith (13) and Tori Welch (11) combined for 24 to lead the Lady Clippers to victory at LaMoille Monday. Shiela Browning led the Lady Lions (0-6) with nine points and Kaitlyn Hughes added six points with eight rebounds.
“It is still a work in progress. We need to focus on rebounds and shots. The girls never quit,” L/O coach Dick Gross said.
Putnam County 53, Indian Creek 41: The Lady Panthers pulled ahead with a 17-6 surge in the fourth quarter at Shabbona Monday. They made 10 of 16 free throws down the stretch, Daniela Pavlovich tallied 29 points for PC.
Hall 35, Henry 28: Junior Becca Herrmann was a triple threat for the Lady Devils Tuesday at Red Devil Gymnasium with 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
Ottawa 68, Princeton 27: Makenzey Wilson and Zoe Mead each scored nine points for the Tigresses in Tuesday’s loss at Prouty Gym.
Mead’s bucket gave the Tigresses a 2-1 lead, but the Lady Pirates took off from there.
“There’s no secret to Ottawa’s success. Coop’s a winning coach with 350 wins and he coaches winning teams,” PHS coach Kevin Hieronymus said of veteran Ottawa coach Mike Cooper. “While the score may not show it, our girls gave a much better effort than Monday against Pontiac. They kept battling.”
Pontiac 72, Princeton 17: Zoe Mead led the Tigresses with six points at Prouty Gym Monday.
Junior college
At Oglesby: Parkland handed the IVCC women their first defeat of the season with an 81-75 setback on the Hilltop Tuesday. Arnisha Thomas had 18 points and Shareita Patton added 14 for the Lady Eagles.
The IVCC men fell to Illinois Central College 71-59. Princeton’s Michael Murray led IVCC with 19 points and Perry Adams added 15.
