Lady Devils hold off the Storm

“We have to slow down when we have the ball and look up the floor. We have to take care of the ball a lot better than we did tonight,” Hall coach Mike Struna said.

“Breaking the press in one thing we continuously try to work on. That’s one thing that definitely held us back in the first half,” Bureau Valley coach Tiffany Gonigam said.

With Bureau Valley leading 14-13 at halftime, the Lady Red Devils (2-4) went on an 8-0 run in the middle of third quarter to give them a six-point advantage. Lady Red Devil junior guard Kaylee Golden scored six of her game high 12 points in the third quarter

“She had a lot of hustle points,” Struna said.  “She forced a lot of turnovers and got some layups in front of our press.  She really worked hard tonight.”

Entering the fourth quarter with Hall up 28-25, the Lady Red Devils outscored the Lady Storm 8-4 in the final eight minutes.

Along with Golden, the Lady Devils were led by junior Becca Herrmann and sophomore sister Ellen Herrmann, who combined for 14 points.

“Becca gave us a boost there at the end of the third quarter and contributed 10 points overall.  Ellen scored four points, but I thought she played great defense and rebounded very well,” Struna said.

The Storm was led by junior guard Lacey DeVenney with eight points and junior post Nicole Bornsheuer with seven points.

“I thought the girls played really well defensively and really tough. I thought we played a lot better in the second half. We’ll continue to get better day-by-day,” Gonigam said.

The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter with Hall taking an 8-5 lead in to the second quarter. With less than two minutes in the first half, Hall starting junior point guard Brenna Faletti had to leave the game after landing wrong while shooting in traffic.
