Two California men have been charged with drug possession after a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

At approximately 2:03 a.m. Dec. 4, the Illinois State Police were conducting routine patrols near Intertate 80 eastbound, Mile Post 72, when a vehicle was observed with no rear registration plate light. During the traffic stop, the LaSalle Police Department canine performed a free air sniff of the vehicle exterior and gave a positive alert for the odor of illegal drugs.

A probable cause search was conducted which revealed a black plastic box in the cargo area that contained 16.8 pounds of suspected cannabis.

Police arrested the driver, Christopher P. Henderson, 26, and Stefano G. Caruso, 25, both of Huntington Beach, Calif., and charged them with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

“This arrest illustrates good police instincts and the important role of our surrounding law enforcement partners – LaSalle Police Department Canine Unit in this particular investigation,” said District 17 Commander Lt. Robert Atherton.
