MANLIUS — Local winners of the Bureau Valley High School Voice of Democracy competition are Conor Mooney, first place; Krista Naaktgeboren, second place; and Emily Phillips, third place. Mooney’s entry will go on to be judged in district competition.

The competition was sponsored locally by Wyanet VFW Post 6634 and its Ladies Auxiliary who award medals and prizes of $100, $75 and $50 savings bonds, as well as gift certificates to the Wyanet V.F.W. chicken fry for the students and their families.

The contest is open to students all over the United States who compete for scholarships by writing and recording an essay on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?”

Several students who entered the competition also honored veterans at the BVHS Veterans Day ceremony, held annually at the high school.
