Beef cow/calf meeting set for Tuesday in Utica

Published: Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 12:28 p.m. CDT

UTICA — The Beef Cow/Calf Meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Celebrations 150 in Utica. This University of Illinois Extension program will provide research-based information and will begin with dinner.

Higher commodity prices, weather extremes and increasing input costs have made for a challenging year for beef producers.

“Drought-induced struggles and high feed costs are the two big hurdles for producers to overcome, but if they can maintain the cow herd, they are likely to see higher profits in the years to come,” said Travis Meteer, a University of Illinois Beef Extension educator.

Producers in northern Illinois will have the opportunity to attend an evening meeting titled, “The Keys to Profitability and Sustainability in the Beef Industry.” The meeting will feature discussion of production strategies that fit the times and lead to higher profits.

Meteer will discuss using corn silage from 2012. Veterinarian Buzz Iliff from Wyoming Veterinary Services will speak about herd health protocols and calving season tips. Teresa Steckler, a U of I beef Extension educator, will discuss new research information on artificial insemination protocols and estrus synchronization. Trevor Toland, owner and operator of Toland’s River Oak Ranch, will discuss pasture management and forage possibilities.

“These topics are timely and can provide advice that brings more dollars into the pockets of beef producers,” Meteer said.

Jill Guynn, county director for the four-county unit hosting the meeting, encourages attendance.

“We hope producers and others interested will take the time to attend this meeting,” she said. “We are pleased to bring University of Illinois Extension’s two statewide beef specialists to our area. Take time to register today and reserve your seat to learn from the experts who conduct research in the field.”

Pre-registration is suggested. The cost of the meeting is $20 and is payable at the door. Please RSVP to the LaSalle County Extension Office at 815-433-0707 or to Meteer, email wmeteer2@illinois.edu. Meeting details are available at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/oardc.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate, please indicate when calling/registering.
