PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library will present “Postmark Princeton,” an evening of readings from letters written by men and women of Princeton from its earliest settlement through World War II, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The program will include letters by Dr. Nathaniel Chamberlain from 1830, as well as the Bryant brothers; Civil War letters of 1862 from John Harford of Dover and Hattie Wiswell, who served as a Union nurse; letters written by Carl Sandburg and his fiancee Lillian Steichen (who taught at Princeton High School) during their courtship in 1908; newspaper accounts written for the Bureau County Republican in the 1920s by Hester Field, a missionary to Korea; and accounts of life during World War II from the PHS Class of 1942’s “Buddy News,” a newsletter produced by Mrs. A. R. Parker for her son, Private Hayden R. Parker and his classmates and from letters by June Gunning Hoge to her husband Hobart Gunning, stationed in Georgia in 1942. Readers will include Dick Dorsch, David and Jessica Gray, Edd and Karen Robinson, Ron McCutchan and Goldy Mortensen.

In addition, the public is invited to participate in a cookie exchange at the Princeton Public Library on Dec. 20, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The format will be “bring a dozen, take a dozen.” The library is asking that participants also bring with them a short note explaining how the cookies (or other holiday treats) pertain to their personal or family story — whether it’s a story of making them as a child, a memory of a beloved relative who passed down the recipe, or an appreciation of the ethnic heritage in which the recipe originated.
