(Still) Looking for Grandpa

Editor’s note: On Nov. 20, the Bureau County Republican ran a photo of a solemn-faced man, and the story of Janice Dieckow, who hoped it was a picture of her grandfather. Here is an update on Dieckow’s search.

“It’s not what I wanted,” said Janice Dieckow. “It’s not my grandfather.”

Dieckow has been on a quest to find a photograph of her grandfather, Howard Cameron Powers, who died several years before she was even born.

According to his obituary, Howard Powers was born Oct. 21, 1887, on a farm south of Providence. He was educated locally and after college worked as an electrician, employed by Princeton Automotive Electric shop. For a number of years he also operated his own radio and electric shop, Powers Radio Service.

Powers lived in Princeton from 1921 until his death, Nov. 15, 1941.

Dieckow recently found a photo of a man she hoped was her grandfather, but after the story ran in the BCR, she found out it was actually a picture of her ex-husband’s grandfather.

While disappointed the photo wasn’t of her grandfather, Dieckow said some good has come of her search.

“I did find some relatives,” she said.

Howard Powers was estranged from his brother, Floyd, so Dieckow was thrilled to hear from Mary Powers of Princeton, who is married to Floyd’s son. Dieckow said they had a wonderful conversation and are now planning a family reunion.

Dieckow still hopes to find a photo of her grandfather and plans to give the other photo to her daughter. She said she’s glad to at least have identified who he was.

“I felt like he had to be somebody’s,” she said.
