Area trio win tournament openers

The Colmone Classic got underway Monday night with the St. Bede Bruins, the Mendota Trojans and Hall Red Devils all getting a head start in pool play.

The Bruins downed Bureau Valley 69-51 in the first game of the night, riding the 1-2 punch of Joe Pyszka (21) and Brad Groleau (20), who combined for 41 points. Sam Lucas (11) and Ethan Duttlinger (10) provided most of the other scoring for the Bruins.

For Bureau Valley, Tommy Johnston netted 17 points and Parker Neuhalfen nine.

Trae Blumhorst poured in 23 points and James Carroll had 14 for Mendota in a 63-48 win over Stark County

Brett Fanning shot the lights out for Hall in the nightcap with 30 points, but the Red Devils needed every bit of it in a 66-63 win over Sherrard. Miguel Villareal added 12 points.

Back in the saddle: Bureau Valley senior Logan Hoffert returned to action for the Storm in Monday’s game vs. Mendota.

He had been out with concussion symptoms since pre-Thanksgiving. He went through a workout following Friday’s home game and cleared all of his tests.
