Celebrating ... Denmark style

Sheffield Historical Society Board members Cleo Lanham (from left), Roger Nielsen and Lisa Aber put the finishing touches on the Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sheffield — just in time for Sunday’s annual Christmas service, set for 2 p.m.

The event includes music by Charles Gebeck, Sue Bromme and Jerry Schroeder and the St. Cecelia’s Angels. Clergy participating in the event are Pastor Jane Courtright, the Rev. Todd Krost and Pastor Brenda Lovick. Christmas carols will also be sung. Board members will fire up the two pot-bellied stoves and light the candles in the church built in 1880, which is a state and national historical site which originally housed the oldest organized Danish Lutheran congregation in the country. The church has been restored to its original state and is a sight to behold. The non-denominational Christmas program is open to the public, and Sheffield Historical Society Board members are hoping to fill the pews for this one-of-a-kind service.
