Sports update

The Colmone Classic got underway Monday night with the St. Bede Bruins, the Mendota Trojans and Hall Red Devils all getting a head start in pool play.

The Bruins downed Bureau Valley 69-51 in the first game of the night, riding the 1-2 punch of Joe Pyszka (21) and Brad Groleau (20), who combined for 41 points. Sam Lucas (11) and Ethan Duttlinger (10) provided most of the other scoring for the Bruins.

For Bureau Valley, Tommy Johnston netted 17 points and Parker Neuhalfen nine.

Trae Blumhorst poured in 23 points and James Carroll had 14 for Mendota in a 63-48 win over Stark County.

Brett Fanning shot the lights out for Hall in the nightcap with 30 points, but the Red Devils needed every bit of it in a 66-63 win over Sherrard. Miguel Villareal added 12 points.

Tuesday's games saw Fieldcrest beat Sherrard 68-52, Mendota down St. Bede 57-42 and Hall fall to Plano 62-52.

On Wednesday, Fieldcrest and Plano meet at 5 p.m. followed by Mendota vs. Bureau Valley at 6:30 p.m. and St. Bede vs. Stark County in the nightcap.

In other boys action Tuesday, IVC beat Ottawa 59-44 and Seneca tripped Princeton.

Girls' basketball

St. Bede 50, Marquette 42: Senior center Mo Dean scored 18 points to lead the Lady Bruins to victory in Tri-County Conference play at Ottawa Monday. Raley Mauck added 10 points and Lexie Miranda and Kelsey Thompson had eight each with Lydia Stariha netting six.

Mendota 53, St. Bede 52: The Lady Trojans rallied to trip the Lady Bruins on Tuesday at the Academy.

Also Tuesday, Dixon downed L-P 36-31.

Somonauk 55, LaMoille/Ohio 36: Shiela Browning had 16 points and Elizabeth Geuther nine for the Lady Lions in defeat on the road Monday in Little Ten Conference play.
