Luke (from left) and Max Bryant, 4- and 6-year-old sons of Hall athletic director/coach Eric Bryant, take a break from the action during the Colmone Classic. Their father frequented their grandfather’s (Eric Sr.) office Red Devil Gym when he was their age.

Trae Blumhorst wears his basketball genes well.

The Mendota senior was named as the MVP of the Colmone Classic.

He scored 20 points to lead the Trojans to a 67-59 win over three-time defending champion Fieldcrest in Saturday’s championship game.

Blumhorst comes by his talents naturally. His father, Brian, a MHS assistant, is the all-time leading scorer at the old Malden High School, scoring 1,498 points from 1977-81.

Dad is quick to note he had four years to collect his scoring; Trae’s has had just two years with the varsity.

• All-tournament: Blumhorst was named on the All-Tournament team with teammate James Carroll, Hall senior Brett Fanning and junior Miguel Villareal, Bureau Valley sophomore Parker Neuhalfen, St. Bede seniors Brad Groleau and Joe Pszycka, Plano junior Elijah Wallace, Fieldcrest senior Brady Sanders and freshman Drew Barth.

Knight in shining armor: Fieldcrest’s Sanders cracked the 1,000-point plateau in the Knights’ 70-41 win over Hall. He had 21 points in that game and 22 vs. Mendota, Saturday.

Real home cooking: When Hall coach Mike Fillippini talks about having homecourt advantage in the Colmone Classic, he’s not kidding. His mother, Joanne, added some home cooking by providing the mostaccioli to the hospitality room menu to go along with Rip’s chicken, Saturday night.

• First for Trojans: Mendota won its first Colmome Classic championship, becoming the 13th different school in the 39-year history of the event. Buda Western won the first three (1974-76) and Fieldcrest has won 11 of the last 20.
