Rush, a senior from Hall, also won the triple jump and took second in the long jump. Sanden, a freshman from Bureau Valley, placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:24.03).

• Former Bureau Valley standout Derrick Johnson, a freshman from Wyanet, is running for Eastern Illinois University.

Two local players from the 2012 Monmouth College softball team were recently named All-America Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Outfielders Brittany Forney (Spring Valley/Hall) and Samantha Sons (Dalzell, St. Bede) were one of six Fighting Scots named to the team based on last season’s grade point average. To be eligible for All-America Scholar Athlete recognition, nominees must achieve a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Forney, who graduated in May and now teaches fourth grade at Spring Valley JFK, played in 31 of the Scots’ 36 games. She hit .257 and drove in 11 runs, tying for fifth on the team in RBIs. The Midwest Conference this spring also named Forney to the league’s Academic All-Conference team.

Sons, a senior, majoring in communication and public relations, started in 26 of her 27 games last spring. A fleet-footed outfielder, she committed just one error last season, tops among outfielders. Sons was also named Academic All-Midwest Conference.
