BV boys top Wethersfield, girls fall to Lady Geese

ERIE — Both of the Bureau Valley teams warmed up on the Holiday Hoop Highway Saturday for the Warkins Memorial Cardinal Classic at Erie.

The BV boys flew past the Flying Geese of Kewanee Wethersfield 70-55; and the BV girls fell to highly-touted Wethersfield 53-26.

Boys: The Storm took a commanding 35-22 lead at halftime and sealed the deal with a 24-19 fourth quarter. Parker Neuhalfen poured in 30 points, and sophomore classmate Tommy Johnston added 18 for the Storm.

The Storm will remain idle until 7:30 p.m. Thursday when they go up against Savanna West Carroll and come back to face Riverdale at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Girls: The Storm scored 14 points in the third quarter, but only 12 the rest of the game in their opening loss to the Flying Geese in the Warkins Memorial Cardinal Classic Saturday. Nicole Bornsheuer had nine points, and Lacey DeVenney had eight for the Storm.

BV will return to action at 3 p.m. Wednesday vs. Monmouth-Roseville.

• Tournaments start up at three other sites Wednesday and Thursday involving six area teams.

At Princeville: The Putnam County girls open round-robin play at 10 a.m. Wednesday vs. Elmwood. On the boys’ side, DePue faces Galva at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by top-seeded Henry vs. Princeville at 7 p.m.

At Marseilles: Two Bureau County teams will square off at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when No. 2 seed St. Bede meets LaMoille/Ohio. No. 5 Putnam County faces Hartsburg-Emden at 3:30 p.m. with top-seeded Kewanee drawing Garder-South Wilmington in the late game.

At Prophetstown: The Hall Lady Devils play twice on Thursday, taking on Hiawatha at 10:30 a.m. and Hinckley-Big Rock at 4:30 p.m.
