‘Women from the Ankle Down’

Today, we can wear Doc Martens by day, kitten heels by night.

“And,” says Bergstein, “isn’t that the greatest pleasure of the 21st-century woman?”

I have to admit, I got quite a kick out of “Women from the Ankle Down.” From the start of the 1900s through recent times, author Rachelle Bergstein walks her readers through the history of women’s shoes, but that’s not all. Along the footpath, she steps near pop culture, history, men’s fashion and science; we learn why men love heels in the bedroom; why we tolerate uncomfortable footwear; and how a polygamist put boots on a superhero.

This is a serious book that’s seriously fun, I loved it, and I think any woman who owns more than “3.7 pairs” of shoes will love it, too. For footwear fashionistas, “Women from the Ankle Down” is a book with sole.
