The host Lady Bruins and the Mendota Trojans have a head start in pool play with the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic which starts back up Thursday morning at St. Bede Academy.
The Lady Bruins stand 2-0 in the White Pool with wins over Seneca (52-22) and LaMoille/Ohio (76-33). St. Bede returns to action at 5 p.m., vs. Kewanee, the top seed in the White Pool, which was upset by both IVC (38-33) and Seneca (43-22).
Mendota also opened 2-0, defeating Princeton (57-26) and Eureka (60-37) in the Green Pool. The Lady Trojans will face Fieldcrest (1-0) at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The holiday hoopla resumes at 11 a.m. Thursday with Princeton (0-1) squaring off vs. Henry-Senachwine (0-1). The Tigresses will also face Eureka (0-2) at 3:30 p.m. In other action Thursday, IVC faces LaMoille/Ohio (0-1) at 2 p.m. and Seneca meets IVC at 6:30 p.m.
At Plano: The Princeton Tigers posted their first win of the 50th Plano Christmas Classic, defeating Somonauk 58-42 on Wednesday. The Tigers will in the nightcap again at 8 p.m. Thursday vs. Burlington Central for the right to advance to Saturday's consolation championship game.
In other action Wednesday, fourth-seed Mendota was upended by Aurora Christian 94-83.
At Erie: The Bureau Valley boys took the day off Wednesday in the Warkins Memorial Cardinal Classic at Erie, but will play twice Thursday — 3 p.m. vs. Knoxville and 7:30 p.m. vs. West Carroll. The Storm opened tournament play Saturday with a 70-55 win over Wethersfield.
The BV girls lost to Monmouth-Roseville 45-15 on Wednesday with Nicole Bornsheuer scoring 10 points. The Storm will take on Stockton at noon Saturday.
At Marseilles: St. Bede beat LaMoille/Ohio 73-32 and Putnam County defeated Hartsburg-Emden 69-59 Wednesday in the opening day of the Marseilles Holiday boys' tournament. The tournament has expanded to 16 teams this year with bracketed play for the first time, continuing Thursday through Saturday. St. Bede is the No. 2 seed behind Kewanee.
At Princeville: Top-seeded Putnam County beat Elmwood 51-44 in the opening day of the girls tournament at Princeville. Carly Gonet paced PC with 14 points.
The 85th annual Princeville Holiday boys’ tournament opened Wednesday with the DePue Little Giants falling to third-seeded Galva 81-31. Adrian Perez scored 11 points for the Little Giants.
Henry-Senachwine is the top seed of the eight-team field with championship night slated for Friday.
At Prophetstown: The Hall Lady Devils will face Hiawatha at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and Hinckley-Big Rock at 4:30 p.m. on opening day of the Lady Prophets’ Tournament. Riverdale, whom Hall will play at 6 p.m. Friday, is top-seeded in the Orange Pool. The host Lady Prophets head up the Black Pool.
The finals are slated for Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m.
