Storm win Cardinal Classic; Bruins win Marseilles Holiday Tournament; Lady Trojans take LBC title
The Bureau Valley Storm captured the crown from the Warkins Memorial Cardinal Classic Saturday night, defeating Orion 51-39.
Parker Neuhalfen led the Storm (12-7) with 19 points and Brian Lange added 14.
At Marseilles: The St. Bede Bruins tripped top-seeded Kewanee 76-63 in the championship game of the Marseilles Holiday Tournament Saturday night. Bruins Brad Groleau and Joe Pyszka were named to the All-Tournament team along with Putnam County's Harold Fay.
Putnam County beat Lexington 48-46 for third place.
LaMoille/Ohio beat Gardner-South Wilmington 59-50.
At Plano:
Princeton fell to former NCIC foe Streator 41-38 in the final night of the Plano Christmas Classic. Zach Stroud had 12 points and Austen Stewart had 10 points,
Girls basketball
At St. Bede: The Mendota Lady Trojans rallied to defeat St. Bede 65-62 in Saturday's championship game of the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic.
St. Bede led as much as 25-11 in the second quarter, but Mendota used a 13-0 run to end the half and scored the first basket of the third quarter to take a 26-25 lead.
Karly Near hit a go-ahead three late for Mendota with 50 seconds left, putting the Lady Trojans ahead 61-60. St. Bede senior Morgan Dean scored inside with 3.4 seconds left, but missed on a possible game-tying free throw.
Tournament MVP Amy Devitt, who led Mendota (12-3) with 32 points, tacked on two free throws for the 65-62 win.
Laura Sickley, led the Lady Bruins (9-11) with 26 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.
Fieldcrest beat IVC 57-45 for third place and Eureka beat Seneca 47-44 for fifth place.
Princeton held a 24-21 lead over Kewanee late in the second quarter, but the Boilers rallied to claim the seventh-place contest 48-36. In other action, Henry held off LaMoile/Ohio 33-31 for ninth, the Lady Lions rallying from a 20-10 deficit, but came up short.
