Ninety Special Olympic athletes competed for gold medals in snowshoe competition in Saturday’s Winter Games at the Bureau County Fairgrounds.

All gold medal winners will advance to the Illinois state Winter Games to be held Jan. 29-31 at Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena. Cross-country skiing competition was canceled due to the shortage of snow and all area competitors automatically qualified.

For Gateway, Becky Nelson won the 100-meters and placed third in the 50-meters, Jennifer Tornow won the 50-meters and took fourth in the 100-meters, Nathan Warren swept the 200- and 400-meter competition.

Princeton High School’s Justin Smith won both the 50- and 100-meter races and Alexandra Dabler was second in both.

Tracy Gibson represented Tracy’s Boxer Club of Walnut with fourth-place finishes in the 50- and 100-meter races.

Cross-contry skiing qualifiers are Missy Anderson, Brandon Endsley and Theresa McLachlan of Gateway.
