PERU — Rene Ficek, a registered dietitian at Illinois Valley Community Hospital, has achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status from the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) by successfully completing NCBDE’s certification examination.

The NCBDE says candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be eligible for certification. Achieving the CDE credential demonstrates to people with diabetes the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting a high quality of care.

Ficek, who came to IVCH in 2010, is a graduate of Southern Illinois University with a degree in nutrition and dietetics. She completed a supervised practice/internship at the University of Iowa.

There are more than 17,400 diabetes educators who hold NCBDE certification. NCBDE was established in 1986 to develop and administer a certification program for health care professionals who teach individuals with diabetes how to manage their disease.
