IVCC announces spring musical auditions

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will hold auditions for the spring musical, "XANADU," at 4 p.m. Jan. 22 and 23 in the Fireplace Lounge, Room B216, where all rehearsals will be held.

Under the direction and choreography of Don Grant Zellmer and produced by Dr. David A. Kuester, IVCC is the first community college in Illinois to produce this Broadway musical hit spoof of the Olivia Newton-John movie. Consistently on the list of the worst movies of all time, XANADU’s subject matter was successful on Broadway. “Sometimes,” said Kuester, “bad movies make great stage shows.”

Set in 1980, the show moves between Mt. Olympus and Venice Beach, Calif., offering a variety of parts for all ages and types of performers. “While the show is ultimately about the opening of a roller disco,” said Zellmer, “not everyone needs to roller skate. We are looking for singers who are comfortable with pop music, as the score from the movie is by the Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John.”
