SPRING VALLEY — Hall held a 19-18 lead over Kewanee after the first quarter of play Saturday at Red Devil Gymnasium. Hall coach Mike Filippini didn’t necessarily like how the game was being played out.

The Boilermakers (14-3) outscored the Red Devils 23-13 in the second quarter to take a 41-32 halftime lead and scored the game’s final 15 points to win going away 74-46.

“I told the coaches after the first quarter we can’t trade baskets with them, we’ve got to make stops,” Filippini said. “Without a big guy in there and getting rebounds, it makes it so much easier. The kids we have are doing the best they can, but we’ve got 6-1 kids out there. ....We’re so dang small that when we get a stop, we can’t get a rebound or a tipped ball and Kewanee gets their hands on it. It’s frustrating, but we’ve got to keep playing.”

Hall senior Brett Fanning continued his assault on the 1,000-point career mark with a 22-point effort, now tallying 965. His three-pointer pulled Hall within 59-45 in the fourth quarter, but the Red Devils would be outscored 15-1 the rest of the way.

“We played a good half. If we would have played like that (Friday) night, we would have won,” Filippini said of Hall’s 51-40 defeat at Midland. “Kewanee’s a good team. Kewanee’s record is what it is because they’re a good team. its not like we got beat by a bad team.”

Erick Fuentes contributed seven points and Miguel Villareal added five for Hall.

• Notes: Hall will travel to Princeton Tuesday night ... Kewanee coach Steve Salisbury returned to the bench Saturday following the death of his father, Gerald, on Tuesday.
