It’s what is on the inside
Greg Wallace, you missed the point. Brent Musburger’s comment on the beauty of the quarterback’s girlfriend was not in itself offensive. After all, she is a very beautiful young woman. The offensive part came when he continued saying quarterbacks get the beautiful girls, and if boys wanted to date beautiful girls, they better start throwing footballs in their backyards. It was this comment that was offensive.
In effect, what Musburger said was that boys have to be football players to date beautiful girls, and girls have to be beautiful to date football players. It is this philosophy that has led girls wanting to be thin and beautiful to extremes. Girls have suffered through anorexia and bulimia to become thin. Many girls have suffered with other psychological illnesses due to low self-esteem and poor self image.
Society has been trying to combat these illnesses for years. We have been trying to teach girls they don’t have to be beautiful to succeed in life. What counts is what is on the inside — not the outside.
