Kittens make strong fourth-quarter rally

The final eight minutes of the sophomore game proved to have the most excitement of the evening Tuesday at Prouty Gymnasium.

PHS trailed 54-40 in the fourth quarter, but outscored the Red Demons 23-3 over the final seven minutes to rally for a 63-57 win in the sophomore preliminary game. A technical foul and an intentional foul called on Hall helped to seal the win.

“We had an intense discussion after the 3rd quarter about playing with heart and effort. I am proud of my guys – they responded,” PHS coach Mike Fredericks said. “The kids that got in during the fourth quarter played the best 5-6 minutes I have seen all year. We need to play with that intensity and that fire on a more consistent basis. If we do that, good things will happen.”

The Kittens (11-11) forced three turnovers in a 1-2 minute span on steals by Jett Wedekind, Brenton Schmidt and Josh Wray and got five offensive rebounds by Wray, Zach Clark and Garrett Duffin. PHS also shot 9 of 12 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Duffin led all scorers with 32 points.

Until we meet again: Hall coach Mike Filippini said he didn’t want to show the Tigers all of the Red Devils’ bag of tricks with their likely rematch as the No. 4 and 5 seeds at the Bureau Valley Regional.

“I told Jesse (Brandt), I wasn’t showing him anything tonight, because I know we’re playing them in the regional. He has no idea what’s coming when we play the 5-4 matchup at Bureau Valley,” Filippini joked.

“We’re going to see the same game again. For some of the people, it really wasn’t that exciting of a game. Hopefully, next time it’s a little more exciting.”

Seneca, St. Bede and Bureau Valley figure to gain the top 3 seeds.

Notes: Hall’s Zach Davis injured a knee in the sophomore game and was taken out by wheelchair. ... The Tigers will return to Prouty Gym Friday night vs. IVC. Hall hosts Marquette Friday with senior guard Brett Fanning needing 15 points to hit the 1,000-point club for career scoring.
