PHS seniors finish what they start

PRINCETON — Monday night was senior night at Princeton and the five Princeton seniors finished the game just like they began it — together.
The Tigresses made sure that it would be a fond memory by defeating Bureau Valley 53-34. After a back and forth first quarter, Princeton took firm control of the game and never looked back.
“I thought each one of the five seniors contributed well. That’s why we wanted to leave them all in at the end of the game, so they could walk off the court with that winning feeling together. They really deserved it,” PHS coach Kevin Hieronymus said. “The juniors and the one sophomore also contributed very well to the win. But I am really proud of the seniors.”
Princeton (5-15) spread the ball around well allowing seven different players, including all five starting seniors, to score. The seniors were Makenzey Wilson, McCaela May, Lexi Marselle, Emmalee Sears and Sydney Hall. All together they scored 33 points.
Marselle and junior teammate Zoe Mead shared scoring honors with 11 points.
Nicole Bornsheur led the Storm with 10 second- half points.
The first quarter was strongly competitive with the score knotted up at 12 nearing the last few seconds. That’s when sophomore Abby Jaques hit a buzzer-beating three to put Princeton up 15-12. Jaques had nine points on the night, but had to leave for nearly two quarters due to injury.
In the second quarter, the Tigresses seized the opportunity and went on an 8-0 run. The half was nearly over before Bureau Valley hit another field goal.
The Tigresses’ Wilson opened up the second half with a steal and four quick points to stretch the lead to 12. Then, their offense went quiet for a while. Unfortunately for the Storm, their surge did not come.
In the fourth quarter both offenses returned to their earlier form. Princeton had 20 fourth-quarter points, Bureau Valley had 11.
“I thought the girls played very tough. They have come a long way since the beginning of the year. I know we will all work to continue to get better,” Bureau Valley coach Tiffany Gonigam said. “We played a good first half, but had to battle with foul trouble and injuries in the second quarter, which really hurt us. The fullcourt pressure really caused us to give up a lot of turnovers in the second half. We took away some positives, but know the things that we need to keep getting better.‚“
• The BV sophs spotted Princeton a 13-0 lead in the sophomore game before rallying for a 25-22 win. Darcy Kepner had 12 points and Valerie Reuter nine points for the Storm.
