Panthers land fifth at Kewanee Invite
GRANVILLE — The Putnam County/Hall wrestling co-op team had a strong showing at the Kewanee Invitational on Jan. 12, placing fifth in a 12-team field. All nine PCH wrestlers medaled. This brought the Putnam County/Hall co-op a fifth-place overall in the 12-team field.
Coach Jerry Kriewald said to have everyone to place “is a great high” before regionals.
“This was our last tournament until regionals that will be hosted by Rock Falls Feb. 2. So far, Tyrell Foockle and Austin Pletsch are undefeated against the nine teams in our regional.”
Leading the way in the 182-pound division was senior Austin Pletsch, who posted a 3-1 record for the tournament, earning two falls to give him second place overall. He is the first wrestler in PC history to make it to the varsity finals in a 12-team tournament.
“Besides beating a wrestler ranked 12th in state last week, now he places second at the tough 12 team Kewanee tournament,” Kriewald said.
Earning third-place finishes were Tyrell Foockle at 160 and Mike Mulasuski at 170. Fourth-place finishes were earned by Dylan Croissant (132), Jacob Levy (152) and Nathan Tonozzi (195). Mario Flores (126) and Marco Gueturrez (220) earned fifth-place finishes, while Luke McCook placed sixth.
The hard luck story of the day was Tyler Tabor. Wrestling in the 138-pound division, Tabor earned his team a sixth-place finish but hurt his shoulder in the semifinals.
“Tyler Tabor had the most upsetting day. He was winning 3-1 with 25 seconds left and ran out of injury time,” Kriewald said.
• PC/Hall earned a split decision at home Jan. 8, losing to Deer Creek-Mackinaw 43-30, while defeating Heyworth 45-30.
Mike Milosky (160) and Tyrell Foockle (170) won by falls in the first meet while Pletsch, Tonozzi and Kurt Neiber all won by forfeit.
PC/Hall dominated Heyworth with seven of the 13 matches won by pinfall. Lucas Foockle, Tyrell Foockle, Pletsch Flores, Dylan Croissant, Luke Cook and Jacob Levy were all winners. Tonozzi was a 4-1 winner at 195.
• The PC/Hall Co-op will host its Super Dual Meet on Jan. 26 with St. Bede, Midland, Ottawa Marquette and Ottawa, starting at 9 a.m.
