Fanning joins 1,000-point club at Hall

Brett Fanning shot his way into the record books at Red Devil Gymnasium, becoming the 10th Hall player to join the 1,000-point club for Hall High School.

Hall’s senior guard tallied 26 points Friday in a 65-62 loss to Ottawa Marquette, now standing No. 10 on the all-time scoring list for Hall with 1,006 career points. His father, Todd, had the honors of making the announcement as the Red Devil Gymnasium public address announcer.

Fanning is the first Red Devil to reach 1,000 points since Korby Kasperski, who stands No. 9 all-time, finished with 1,011 points in 2007-08.

Shawn Jeppson (1994-98) stands No. 1 on the Hall scoring list with 1,829 points. Next down the line, according to BCR files, are Rollie Himes (1972-75) with 1,209, Derek Zeman (1985-88) with 1,176, Jeff Sebben (1977-80) with 1,149, Harold Meek (1944-46) with 1,124, Ryan Peterson (1989-92) with 1,079, Ray Mack (1956-58) with 1,066 and Ken Meek (1950-52) with 1,017.

Girls’ regionals: St. Bede secured the No. 1 seed for the Spring Valley Hall 2A girls’ regional basketball tournament. The Lady Bruins (12-12) will await the winner of the Feb. 4 play-in game between No. 4 Hall and No. 5 Bureau Valley for a 6 p.m. tip on Feb. 5. The second semifinal pits No. Ottawa Marquette vs. No. 3 Princeton at 8 p.m.

The Hall Regional champ advances to the Somonauk Sectional to face the Wilmington Regional champion at 6 p.m. Feb. 11.

In 1A, LaMoille/Ohio drew the 5 seed and a Feb. 4 showdown vs. Little Ten rival Leland/Earlville, the 4 seed, at 7:30 p.m. Newark and Serena are the top two seeds.

DePue is the No. 5 seed at Midland where Putnam County drew the top seed.

Mendota was assigned to the Sterling 3A Regional with Dixon, Rock Falls and Rochelle.

Boys’ regionals: Bureau Valley plays host to the local 2A boys’ regional, which draws St. Bede, Seneca, Hall, Princeton and the Storm.

LaMoille/Ohio will play in the Erie Regional and DePue and Putnam County will head to Henry for 1A regionals.

Mendota was assigned to the Rock Falls 3A Regional with L-P, Dixon, Ottawa and Sterling.

Last-second shots: Princeton varsity girls assistant coach Ken Wilson was surprised Saturday when 21 members of his family from Michigan made a surprise visit to the Tigresses’ game at Rock Falls. Many brought signs for his daughter, PHS senior Makenzey Wilson, but had their party noise makers quickly silenced by the game officials.
