Philip McGinnis

SPRING VALLEY — Philip T. McGinnis, 89, of 220 E. Cleveland St., Spring Valley, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Scottsdale Healthcare in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Born Aug. 18, 1923, in Spring Valley to Philip and Elsie (Hicks) McGinnis, he married Joan Whalen Oct. 4, 1952, in Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. She survives.

He worked at the Spring Valley City Bank for 53 years, where he was a past president and past president of the bank board. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as an ensign.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Spring Valley, the Spring Valley American Legion, Deer Park Country Club, the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Bedan Club. He served on the St. Bede Academy Board, Illinois Valley Community College Board and St. Margaret's Hospital Board, and was a former Spring Valley commissioner.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mary McGinnis of Chicago and Ellen (Rob Putnam) McGinnis of Pleasanton, Calif.; two sons, Thomas (Robin) McGinnis of Riverton, N.J., and Matthew (Erica) McGinnis of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, John and Tim.

Prayers will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Spring Valley, with the Rev. Robert Spilman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Spring Valley.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with an American Legion service at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Hall Township Food Pantry or St. Bede Abbey.
